What Causes Water Leaks?

There are a few factors that can actually lead to water leaks. Some you can prevent while others are a bit more difficult to avoid. For example, leaks can be caused by clogs in your toilets and drains; this will eventually lead to leaks in the pipe system.

Another common cause of water leaks is rust and deterioration in pipes. Over time, pipes will naturally start to show signs of wear and tear. The trees around your property can also harm your pipes; roots can grow into your pipeline and create larger cracks.

How Do You Find Hidden Leaks?

We locate water leaks through sound and visual inspections.

When it comes to sound testing, we use an ultrasound device. This device is traced down the pipe to determine the exact location of any leaks.

Ultrasound testing can locate a leak the size of a pinhole, making this method especially helpful when the leak cannot be detected through a visual aid.

With visual testing, one tool we use is a video pipe camera. A flexible rod with a camera attached is inserted into the pipe. The camera will capture any issues with the pipe in real time.

How Can You Avoid Leaks?

If you have metal pipes, you may want to consider repiping with PEX pipes; the latter do not rust or deteriorate as quickly. Another way to prevent leaks is to be mindful of what enters your drains. This may be difficult to control with the high volume of people passing through the building. What you can do is have regular drain cleaning or hydrojetting performed to reduce risk of further damage to your pipes.

If you notice a leak–whether through a spike in your water bill, wet spots on your flooring or ceiling, or even lower water pressure–it is important to take action immediately. A leak that goes undetected or ignored will eventually lead to mold, potential water damage, and other issues with your overall plumbing system.

Don’t let a rising water bill catch you off guard! You may have a hidden water leak. Call us today at (516) 671-3232 for quality leak detection at competitive rates.
