What are Common Water Heater Problems?

There are two main problems found in water heaters–leaking and overheating. Each has a number of causes, mostly resulting from a lack of maintenance or incorrect use.

As a water tank ages, its walls start corroding. This thins the surface of the wall and creates leaking. Other causes include faults during installation or incorrect repairs, which create gaps in the water tank. Inadequate sealing is another common reason water tanks begin to leak. Similarly, overheating is often caused by a malfunctioning heating element or thermostat.

Other problems that occur in water heaters, whether as a result of the two main issues or otherwise, is discolored water, mold along the water tank walls, and excessive noise as the water is heated.

How Long Do Water Heaters Last?

Water heaters have an optimum lifespan of roughly ten years, but this is greatly affected by how the tank is used and maintained. Infrequent maintenance can decrease your unit’s lifespan to five or seven years. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can actually increase the lifespan well up to fifteen years or more.

The quality of the water produced by the tank, long-term maintenance costs, and the number of breakdowns are all affected by the age of the water tank. Once past its optimum life expectancy, it is often cheaper to replace the water tank rather than continue to repair it.

Want to Prevent Problems?

Professionals often recommend yearly preventative maintenance. This is important for the health of your water heater and the comfort of your home or commercial site. During routine maintenance, our technicians will not only be checking if everything looks up to code–we will also be looking out for potential problems on the verge of developing and handle them before more costly repairs are required.
