What is a Sump Pump?
A sump pump is a mechanical pump designed to lead accumulated water away from a low spot or sump. These sump basins are usually located in underground basement levels of buildings that are damp and which are vulnerable to flooding during heavy rain or from accidents and mishaps.
Most modern sump pumps consist of a sump basin made of plastic, metal, or concrete to collect up to 25 gallons of water, and a pump up to 1/2 horsepower (400W) wired into the building’s power. Some units also come with a battery back-up pump in case of power outages.
Why Install A Sump Pump?
Sump pumps are always a good idea even if rain water flooding is not a common problem. A building can take on water for many reasons, and it is always best to be prepared. A sump pump ensures that no water will accumulate and potentially damage equipment or products stored on the same level. What Kind of Sump Pump is Best?
The two main types of sump pumps are submersible pumps and pedestal pumps.
Submersible pumps are located on the interior of the sump, and are water-sealed to stop electrical issues. This is ideal if you have limited space or do not want the pump to be visible. These kinds of pumps last up to fifteen years. They are more costly to install, but they are also more efficient at pumping out debris and do not clog as often.
Pedestal pumps are installed above the sump and are easily accessible for maintenance or clearing of debris. When properly constructed, serviced, and maintained, these pumps can last up to 30 years.
What About Battery Back-Up Sump Pumps?
Battery powered back-up pumps are installed in case the primary pump fails or loses power. They can be set up to utilize the piping and systems that the primary pump uses, but the battery back-up units still need special components to run. Some of these components include a deep cycle battery, water level sensor, and a check valve.
How Should You Maintain Your Sump Pump?
Sump pumps and basins require upkeep in order to last. Yearly examinations are the most common suggestion, but pumps that run frequently should be checked more often. One of the best things to do is inspect the pump, check valve, discharge line opening, and intake hole for debris and obstructions. Most commonly dirt, sand, and gravel can be found and easily removed to help the pump work at its best.
