On July 1, 2008, the New York City Department of Buildings instituted a major change to the plumbing code, the first code change since 1968. This important change placed a new focus on the prevention of backflow into a building’s water supply. Bacteria and pathogens of all sorts can be siphoned back into the water system without the aid of a backflow prevention device. Legionnaire’s Disease is assumed to have come from backflow of a hotel AC system in Philadelphia in the late 1970s.

What Happens If You Don’t Have a Backflow Preventer Installed?

If a system is not protected, water can flow both in and out of a building or fixture. If there is a drop in water pressure coming in from the main line or in the building at all, contaminated water can flow backwards and carry the contaminants back into the main water supply. This backflow is known as back-siphoning. Backflow prevention devices are needed on public water systems to keep potential contaminants from entering the public water system.

What Goes On During Backflow Testing?

Our qualified testers will test containment devices, including double-check valves and reduced pressure zone devices. We bring the experience needed to make sure everything is working properly.

The backflow valve is an important device that prevents back-siphoning from happening. It is what protects your main water supply. It is important to not only take care of an Order you receive, but to also check the backflow valve for any leaks and to make necessary repairs to ensure the health of your building’s occupants.

During the inspection we will carefully examine the existing equipment. Using a pressure gauge, we will examine the existing water pressure in the valve as well as inside the building. These readings will provide a realistic measurement when determining where the pressure should stay, as well as help identify potential problems and needed repairs.

The advantage of seeking professional help is that we are able to do this process more efficiently, including identifying valve related problems quickly and testing all the valves in the system.

Make sure you remain compliant with local backflow regulations and have your prevention device inspected annually. Call us at (516) 671-3232 for professional testing services to keep your drinking water safe.
