On July 1, 2008, the New York City Department of Buildings instituted a major change to the plumbing code, the first code change since 1968. Legionnaire’s Disease is assumed to have come from backflow of a hotel AC system in Philadelphia in the late 1970s.
What Happens If You Don’t Have a Backflow Preventer Installed?
If a system is not protected, water can flow both in and out of a building or fixture. If there is a drop in water pressure coming in from the main line or in the building at all, contaminated water can flow backwards and carry the contaminants back into the main water supply. This backflow is known as back-siphoning. Backflow prevention devices are needed on public water systems to keep potential contaminants from entering the public water system.
